ABOUT PENFOLDS WINE:
Beyond the (PENFOLDS)RED partnership: Penfolds has been producing an impressive array of wines since 1844 and undisputedly led the development of Australian fine wine into the modern era. Penfolds wines are widely celebrated for their diversity and quality across many price-points. The strength of Penfolds is that the wine comes first. Penfolds’ range of table wines is utterly Australian, evoking a generosity of spirit and the beauty of the Australian landscape. Learn more at penfolds.com.

Koonunga Hill
Named after one of Penfolds’ Barossa Valley vineyards, Koonunga Hill is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Since the first vintage in 1976, the brand has steadily built a reputation based on widespread acclaim.

When the 1976 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was first released, the local market was awash with surplus red wine. This meant the winemaking team would need to produce a superior product for a low sale price, if the new label was to have any hope of survival.

“There’s never been such a thing as a crook Koonunga Hill. It’s always a reliable drop, but in top years you can expect something out of the ordinary.” Don Ditter, former Penfolds Chief Winemaker and creator of Koonunga Hill.

The 1976 Shiraz Cabernet sold for less than $2 and was an instant success, immediately establishing Koonunga Hill’s esteemed reputation for over-delivering on quality, which continues to this day.

“The Koonunga Hill reds are all about freshness, generosity of flavour, richness and vivacity of fruit. These are affordable and great everyday drinking styles that reflect Penfolds’ remarkable vineyard resources and outstanding red winemaking skills.” Peter Gago, Chief Winemaker.

Thomas Hyland
The Penfolds Thomas Hyland range is named after Thomas Francis Hyland, a Victorian Civil Service Officer who joined the family business soon after marrying Christopher and Mary Penfold’s daughter, Georgina. In 1895, following Mary Penfold’s passing Thomas took full responsibility for the winery business.

Under Hyland’s stewardship the Penfolds business grew to account for one-third of South Australia’s entire wine production during 1896 – a remarkable testament to his unyielding vision and incomparable work ethic.

The Thomas Hyland range neatly follows the Penfolds philosophy of multi-regional blending, yet is also inextricably linked to Adelaide – the birthplace of Penfolds and a truly great wine city surrounded by some of the finest vineyards in Australia. The diverse climates of the various wine regions within the Adelaide zone grow grapes that display freshness, intense fruit definition, richness of flavour and balance.

The Thomas Hyland range of wines, proudly sourced from the region where Penfolds was first established in 1844, honours Thomas’s vision and determination, which laid the foundations for the renowned Penfolds winery of today.
